Full Sail Film Graduate Opens Film This Weekend In Top Spot at the Box Office and Makes Film History

Full Sail Film Graduate, Darren Lynn Bousman, took the industry by storm with his first major motion picture release, SAW II, which hit #1 at the Box Office this weekend. Bousman served as director and co-writer of the film which won the weekend with $30.5 million.

WINTER PARK, FL (PRWEB) November 3, 2005 -- Full Sail Film Graduate, Darren Lynn Bousman, took the industry by storm with his first major motion picture release, SAW II, which hit #1 at the Box Office this weekend. Bousman served as director and co-writer of the film which won the weekend with $30.5 million, or $10,342 per screen, in 2,949 theatres. It also almost doubled the $16.5 million opening of The Legend of Zorro sequel which came in at #2.

SAW II was distributed by Lions Gate Films and achieved the biggest-grossing single day in Lions Gate history with its estimated opening day box office of $12.2 million. The film also joins FAHRENHEIT 9/11 and DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN by Tyler Perry as the third Lions Gate film to open at number one at the weekend box office in the last 16 months. SAW II also ranked as one of the highest-grossing horror sequels of all time. The film even outperformed the opening weekend of last year’s SAW by more than $12 million, or approximately 70%.

Lions Gate Releasing President, Tom Ortenberg, said, “SAW II’s opening weekend demonstrates that powerful product can cut through the so-called box office doldrums, and this weekend’s box office performance attests to the strength and enduring value of the SAW franchise for Lions Gate. Darren Lynn Bousman made a brilliant filmmaking debut, and an incredibly talented cast obviously delivered the goods. With superb exit polls, we expect SAW II to continue on its way to becoming one of Lions Gate’s highest-grossing films ever.”

It is Bousman's third movie release in the role of director. He has directed independent features such as Butterfly Dreams (2000) and Identity Lost (2001). He’s also directed a music video for nu-metal act Static-X and worked on the crew of National Lampoon’s Van Wilder. SAW II will also be his first major screenplay credit, which he shares with co-writer, Leigh Wannel, who wrote and created the original SAW film.

“The entire Full Sail Family is proud and excited for all of Darren’s remarkable accomplishments. He excelled with his Full Sail education, worked tirelessly, and never stopped reaching to achieve his dream,” said Garry Jones, President of Full Sail. “He is an example to students everywhere of the success that can be attained when you put your passion to the test.”
