Founder of Scientific Selection published for Asian market by ICFAI University Press.

Dr. Wendell Williams, a widely recognized assessment expert and the founder of Scientific Selection, Inc., has been featured in a new collection of articles published for the Indian business community. The new book is part of an extensive series on HR strategy and management. According to Dr. Williams, “The publication of this series shows that innovative, “scientific” approaches to HR are rapidly being adopted by forward-thinking managers worldwide.”

The book, titled “Effective Recruitment: Concepts and Cases,” provides a broad range perspectives on modern recruiting techniques, including strategic approaches to workforce management, the design of integrated recruiting systems, and the use of hiring metrics. In addition to Dr. Williams, the book offers essays and case studies from thought leaders in recruiting strategy and technology such as Dr. Charles Handler of Rocket-Hire and Yves Lermusiaux of Taleo.

In his article titled “The Incredible Cost of a Bad Hire,” Dr. Williams argues that managers should consider the true costs of hiring in the broadest possible terms, by including the enormous long-term costs of hiring low-performing employees in addition to the more obvious expenses involved in recruiting and hiring. A quantitative approach to hiring and rational, validated hiring tools can help narrow the variance among the performance of employees, and can improve overall productivity.

Dr. Williams sees overseas interest in modern hiring processes as an encouraging sign that enlightened assessment principles are gaining ground. “It’s amazing to me that validated, scientific assessment of employee performance, both before and after hire, isn’t yet universal,” he says. “Hiring has been one of the last refuges for management by ‘gut instinct.’ But that is changing, because good assessment has such a proven, positive impact organizational performance overall.”

He also believes that American companies should take note of the growing Asian interest in advanced hiring practices. “A common perception is that Western companies employ more sophisticated management methods,” he explains, “while many of their overseas competitors and ‘offshoring’ partners depend on cheap labor, lack of regulation, and so forth to be competitive. If this was ever true, it won’t be so for long. American hiring managers who still rely on subjective interviews and “I know ‘em when I see ‘em” instincts are literally killing their companies’ competitive advantage.”
