Architect Delivers High Style on Low Budget for New Non-Profit Facility

Despite a meager budget, Los Angeles Architect Martin Roy Mervel blends cutting edge design with pragmatic functionality for new non-profit facility in Santa Monica, California.

Santa Monica, CA (PRWEB) November 9, 2005 -- In the non-profit world, where little money or thought is allotted to the physical design and appearance of the work space, accomplished Los Angeles architect Martin Roy Mervel, (AIA) owner of Studio/Slab Inc. has come up with a solution that successfully blends contemporary design and functionality within a limited budget.

Mervel’s latest design will be unveiled on Wednesday, November 9th, as the Chrysalis foundation launches its new Santa Monica location. Chrysalis is a Los Angeles based non-profit organization whose purpose is to help the economically disadvantaged become self-sufficient through employment opportunities.

Mervel used the center’s limited $300,000 budget to renovate and design the 5000 sq. foot space. The solution is a seamless blend of visual comfort, contemporary design and practical functionality. Upon entry, one is immediately drawn to its soft lines, earth tone colors and organic shapes. Natural wood and exposed brick add to the inviting warm environment that motivates Chrysalis’ clients to return. A sense of comfort and security enables them to fulfill their goal of gaining employment.

“I wanted to create a warm, inviting and welcoming space designed to calm the turbulence and overcome the obstacles in our client’s life. We exposed brick masonry for human warmth, wrapped the community garden of knowledge with ribbons of light, strategically inserted skylights on a blue canopy ceiling for visual comfort, and painted with a natural palette to make a soothing, friendly environment,” explains Mervel.
