Banner Health recently enhanced their pre-employment background screening procedures with the assistance of Phoenix-based Universal Background Screening. The decision to enlarge the scope of background checks conducted on all new hires was made after an extensive internal review by Banner, with assistance from Universal. In addition, Banner consolidated multiple vendors and selected Universal to conduct background checks for all facilities in its seven-state network throughout the Western United States.

“The screening practices previously used by Banner exceeded industry standards, and the enhanced checks conducted by Universal Background Screening take their program to a new level within the healthcare industry,” said Kevin Olson, Chairman and CEO of Universal Background Screening. “We expect the result to be a safer environment for both patients and staff members.”

Under the healthcare provider’s new screening program, background checks include extensive criminal background searches, nationwide sex offender registry checks, verification of education degrees, professional license certifications, employment reference checks and more. Universal Background Screening provides such services to over 750 clients nationwide, including the majority of hospitals in Arizona.

While Universal Background Screening serves clients nationwide in a variety of industries, the company holds unique credentials and experience serving the healthcare industry. For the past ten years, Universal has been the preferred background screening vendor for the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association (AzHHA). The company was awarded the same designation by the Colorado Hospital Association earlier this year.

In addition to enhancing the scope of its background checks, Banner is rolling out the new screening program to all of its twenty facilities, while consolidating with Universal as a single vendor.

“The decision by Banner Health to utilize Universal Background Screening to conduct background checks for all their locations will save money, improve efficiency, and most importantly, ensure that their background screening program is conducted on a consistent basis,” Olson said.

Dick Todd, President and Founder of Universal Background Screening, has managed the relationship with Banner Health since the companies began their business relationship several years ago. Todd, with the support of the company’s client services team, is working with each Banner location to ensure a successful transition to Universal and the expanded screening program.

“Banner Health and Universal Background Screening have built a strong partnership over the past several years through the efforts of our hard working staff,” said Todd. “We are proud to serve the needs of the entire Banner Health system, and look forward to a successful relationship in years to come.” He added that before the end of 2005, all Banner locations in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Nebraska, Nevada and Wyoming would be serviced by Universal.
