Behlman Electronics Inc., known for its leadership in providing power products for industrial, commercial and military applications, has been contracted to provide 21 power supplies for the LAMPS MKIII SH-60 Seahawk program, the U.S. Navy’s anti-submarine/anti-ship surveillance and targeting system.
Behlman had previously supplied 30 units during the program’s pre-production and low-rate production phase – but only after going to an extreme to prove that Behlman’s design engineers were up to the challenge.
“Flat out, the customer said it would be impossible for Behlman to build the power supply to meet all the required specifications,” explained Behlman Vice President of Sales and Marketing Ron Storm. “We knew otherwise, but also knew that the customer would need to see something to be convinced.”
Working without a contract, Behlman designed and built a first unit “brass board” that enabled Behlman to show that not only could the power supply be built, but that Behlman could build it using a modified COTS design – at a tremendous cost-savings over an alternative mil-spec design.
The Behlman power supplies will convert three-phase 400 Hz helicopter power to multi-output, regulated, low-noise DC power. The units are high-power density, 8-output, low-noise DC power supplies qualified to meet all MIL-STD requirements for military aircraft (-704, -461, -810). All units feature an RS-422 interface and are required to pass ESS screening for temperature and vibration.
“Behlman’s can-do attitude goes beyond talking the talk, and this contract proves it,” continued Storm. “While others might say we took an unnecessary risk by working without a contract, we knew Behlman could meet the challenge. And we did.”
