Hundreds of supporters and the faithful joined in the $11 million groundbreaking celebration for New Mercies Christian Church, led by Pastor Jesse Curney, III recently.    New Mercies, recognized as one of the most exciting and fastest-growing ministries in metro Atlanta, has seen its active membership jump from slightly over 100 to 5,000 in just three years. Special guests included Curney’s mentor, Bishop Eddie L. Long, Senior Pastor, New Birth Missionary Baptist Church and East Point Mayor Patsy Jo Hilliard.

“We celebrate a tremendous achievement here today,” said Pastor Curney. “The few have become the many. And I want to thank you and welcome you to New Mercies new home.”

In need of additional space, New Mercies acquired a 72,000 square foot property in Gwinnett County, which includes a former Ingles grocery store, on Five Forks Trickum Road in Lilburn, Georgia. The first phase of the expansion features a Family Life Center. Subsequent phases will produce a Worship Sanctuary, Youth Worship Center, a Bookstore and Café.

“Pray for your Pastor because he’s going through a lot,” urged Bishop Long. “This kind of achievement comes with a lot of stress.”

In 1987 Pastor Curney became an Associate Minister at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. Four years later he was recruited to lead the Youth Department full-time and serve as its Ministerial Advisor. Subsequent appointments included Assistant Pastor, Executive Director of the Education Ministry, Youth and Young Adult Ministry, Children’s Ministry and Evangelism Ministry. He later led New Birth’s juvenile offender program and developed G.A.N.G. (God’s Anointed New Generation), one of the nation’s most effective youth conferences.

A member and Chaplain of Kappa Alpha Psi, Decatur Alumni, Pastor Curney is a graduate of Beulah Heights Bible College and Luther Rice Seminary. He is married to the former Aleana Pope, his bride of 17 years and together they have three children.

The new facility will open in the Fall of 2006. For more information on New Mercies Christian Church call 770-925-8600 or visit http://www.newmerciescc.org.
