Statement of Need:
Respondents to the recently released Thinking Ahead global survey of 737 people with bipolar disorder reported that bipolar disorder had a negative impact on their lives (48%) and the lives of their friends and family (35%). 80% indicated that successful treatment of the disorder would lead to significant improvement in quality of life, ability to achieve goals, maintain employment, and improve interpersonal relationships. Bipolar disorder typically presents as an alternating pattern of mania and depression. Often, however, it may also present as mixed episodes reflecting the simultaneous presence of both manic and depressive symptoms. The presence of mixed symptoms in bipolar disorder is common and often under-recognized. Recognition of the concurrence of manic and depressive symptoms is critical to appropriate treatment selection. This interactive, case-based psychCME TV activity will highlight the challenges of recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with mixed episodes and will help practitioners optimize outcomes by fusing evidence-based findings with their experience in the treatment of mixed episodes.
