“Deal reached on managing the internet!” reads a headline regarding the World Summit on the Information Society. Which all sounds very reassuring, except when you realize what the U.S. negotiators DID agree to – the creation of yet another “international forum” to “address global concerns.” And that may just amount to capitulation, says Joe Klein, author of the new book Global Deception: The UN’s Stealth Assault on America’s Freedom (World Ahead; hardcover; $25.95; ISBN 0974670146.)
“As the head of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has stated so eloquently, the net and politicians don’t mix – particularly politicians as venal and smooth as Kofi Annan. To put him in charge of an international forum on the Internet is like putting the wolf in charge of the sheep,” charges Klein. Taxation, speech regulation and outright censorship - “for the world’s own good, naturally” – are the activities sure to follow any UN participation in the future of this revolutionary technology.
According to Klein, this stealth assault is part and parcel of the UN’s approach towards world governance. “As usual, Annan is positioning himself as a champion for the poor, but his claims that the UN provides the only means for uplifting the disenfranchised via technology is pure bunk.” Continues Klein, “It’s just another ploy on the part of the global elite to control –and tax - that which it is not capable of inventing. As Global Deception chillingly documents, once you create a sitting ‘international forum,’ treaties and covenants are sure to follow, ones designed specifically to ensnare the U.S. into unacceptable compromises.” And unless the U.S. is very careful, this forum will be no different.
“As usual, UN Ambassador John Bolton has hit things on the head,” Klein asserts. “Bolton has likened the UN to the camel pushing his nose into the tent. Once you give Kofi Annan and his minions an inch, lock up the silverware…and the software.”
