Blues in C -- Raising Awareness of Hepatitis C

Houston's first blues festival to raise awareness of Hepatitis C and offer free testing.

(PRWEB) November 17, 2005 -- The Texas Liver Coalition is at it again. Helping others help themselves! In 1995, the coalition began as a support group in Houston and has grown to 30 support groups around the state with an annual attendance of 8100 people. Through their network, website and toll free information line they serve about 20,000 people annually. A large part of their mission is to provide appropriate counseling and referrals to those found to be infected with Hepatitis C. The best scientific information suggests that there are 387,000 Texans with Hep C and most do not know it. This is the kind of data that inspires Dave Erickson, Director of The Texas Liver Coalition to stay the course! “I want to do anything I can to get information about our services out there to everyone who needs it and to help those infected become aware of their status.” says Erickson. “The “Blues in C” event will allow us to offer free testing for anyone who wishes to be tested. Anyone found to be infected will receive a referral to treatment, regardless of insurance status or income. This event will allow us to perform our Mission as we have never been able to do in the past.”

To create “Blues in C”, Dave asked friends in the Houston music community to help organize a couple of blues bands. The response was overwhelming and the event was booked. Kelly Zirbes, spokesperson for HepCAware.org, offered to host the event. “Concerts are a great way to educate people” says Zirbes. “I’ve been organizing musical events to raise awareness of hepatitis C for over 5 years and it works!”

"Blues in C" takes place on Sunday December 4th at the Meridian in downtown Houston, located at 1503 Chartres. The concert starts at 2pm and will go til 7pm. Music will be provided by Monica Marie and The Blues Cruizers, The Bert Wills Band, Rocky Hill with Sonny Boy Terry and Hamilton Loomis. There is no cover charge and all donations will go to The Texas Liver Coalition and KPFT 90.1 FM
