Sawdust and oil will be sticking to their skin and clothes. Shirts, pants, and boots are going to be stained and gritty. After a few hours of work, these people will look like disheveled vagabonds. Plus, their ears might be ringing from the noise and their hands vibrating from the equipment they have been lifting all day. This is a gift? Some people might say this sounds like torture. However, the recipients are excited and happy as can be.

The gift is a class on chainsaw carving. Chainsaw carving is the increasingly popular form of art where regular folks, artists and non-artists alike, use a chainsaw to transform old logs or stumps into cute bears or majestic eagles. Past chainsaw carving students have included Carol Slaughter, a 72 year old retired school teacher from Fox Island. Washington. She said, “I haven’t had that much fun in a long time!” Another student, Lou Fuchs of Essex, Connecticut, was a struggling highly trained artist until he took the course. He says, “The course and entire experience were worth every penny.”

The George Kenny School of Chainsaw Carving recently taught its 100th student. Many of the newest students are having their tuition paid by others as presents and gifts. George jokes, “I expected young artists to take this class. It turns out that Grandma is buying it for Grandpa. I guess she wants him out of the house.” For whatever reason, this has turned out to be a hot Christmas gift.
