Featured in publications such as the San Jose Mercury News, RateDesi is an outlet for South Asian youngsters (also referred to as "Desi" youngsters) in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada who wish to participate in a community that fuses their parent's conservative values with the values of the Western societies that they live in.

When I started RateDesi, it was intended to be a Desi clone of mainstream picture rating websites. But it soon became so much more, it became a meeting ground for South Asian kids outside the sub-continent, it became a place to connect to our South Asian culture with a Western twist. None of us want to go to Shaadi.com, so we come to RateDesi instead.

RateDesi.com reached its 150,000th registered member today cementing its status as the world's largest website for South Asian youngsters.

Founder Sameer Parwani, who developed the website as a Cornell University sophomore in January 2003, could not be more thrilled with the state of RateDesi: "When I started RateDesi, it was intended to be a Desi clone of mainstream picture rating websites. But it soon became so much more, it became a meeting ground for South Asian kids outside the sub-continent, it became a place to connect to our South Asian culture with a Western twist. None of us want to go to Shaadi.com, so we come to RateDesi instead."

Matrimonial websites, such as Shaadi.com, are among the most successful South Asian websites because they appeal to the traditional importance that South Asians place on marriage. However, South Asian youngsters in the West don't want the burden of marriage on their shoulders but still enjoy meeting people from within their own culture. RateDesi offers them a pressure-free environment to do so.

RateDesi allows users to post a profile, description, and photos. Users then interact with each other via private messaging, comments, and interview questions. Additionally, the RateDesi message board boasts over 4 million posts to date. The vast majority of RateDesi users are high school or college students aged 15-23 in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.
