The 2005 Baldrige Award recipients were selected from among 64 applicants. DynMcDermott Petroleum Operations Company was one of six recipients who were evaluated rigorously by an independent board of examiners in seven areas: Leadership; Strategic Planning; Customer and Market Focus; Measurement, Analysis and Knowledge Management; Human Resource Focus; Process Management; and Results. The evaluation process included about 1,000 hours of review and an on-site visit by teams of examiners to clarify questions and verify information in the applications.

The Baldrige award is presented annually to organizations that distinguish themselves through management excellence and continuous improvement to stakeholders. Headquartered in New Orleans, DynMcDermott becomes the first Louisiana organization to receive this prestigious award.

DynMcDermott operates the Department of Energy's four Strategic Petroleum Reserve crude oil storage sites located along the Gulf Coasts of Louisiana and Texas. Together, these sites have the capability to store more than 700 million barrels of crude oil in underground salt domes. The most recent use of the SPR was immediately after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005, disrupting crude oil production, transportation, and refining capabilities in the region. In response, President Bush directed the Department of Energy to both loan and sell oil from the SPR to ease the market disruption and production delays caused by the hurricanes.
