Backyard wrestlers become professionals in Backyard Empire, a novel by Alex Hutchinson
Backyard Empire by Alex Hutchinson is a behind the scene's look at six months in an outrageous backyard wrestling federation.
(PRWEB) December 3, 2005 -- As the antics of teenage backyard wrestlers increases in danger and complexity so do the stories that follow. Backyard Empire by Alex Hutchinson is based on a true story of life imitating sports entertainment with some gruesome outcomes and a few amazing successes.
Opponents of the underground activity fear that young kids will be severely hurt or killed if its popularity continues to increase. According to the author "It's a fad that's not fizzling out anytime soon." He contends that many parents being hypocritical about their kid's activities, "The problem isn't simply that the sport is dangerous but more so that these parents don't have any time or interest in their own children." Alex has defended backyard wrestlers on a cable television show in Plymouth, Massachusetts. "The panel on the show were very surprised to hear how organized we were in the EBA. They expected to hear about random, undignified violent acts and instead were shown footage of a well thought out and entertaining weekly show." In Backyard Empire the characters do get injured but only a couple cross the line of safety and they pay a price for it. Alex says that's the way it should be. "Nothing in life is safe. Ten kids die every year playing high school football but no one is going to ban that sport. When someone makes a mistake they learn from it. The truth is, despite all the negative press, no one has ever died during a backyard wrestling show. These kids work hard, train steadily, many stay away from drugs or gangs and instead put effort into a theatrical performance. Why are we condemning them for their creativity?"
In the end these creative teenagers did more than leave their bodies covered in scarred memories. Three joined the military and served in Iraq, one became the lead singer of the rock group A New Way Down, two became novelists and five took on careers as professional wrestlers.
