FDA is Still Standing Firm on Higher Dosage Ephedra Products
Weight Loss and Diet pills containing ephedra and mahuang are on the shelves again, but the FDA still wants the higher dosage products banned.
(PRWEB) December 4, 2005 -- The FDA is taking a hard stand on ephedra products that contain more than 10mg of ephedra per dosage. Ephedra products like Stacker 2 with ephedra, Stacker 3 with ephedra, Diet Fuel with Mahuang and Ripped Fuel with Mahuang are under attack from the FDA because they contain more than 10mg of ephedra per dosage. Since these products have not been manufactured for over 2 years, the supply of these ephedra products has dwindled. This has caused a sharp increase in demand and prices for these types of ephedra products have skyrocketed.
Many distributors and health food retailers has been put on notice by the FDA to either remove these higher dosage ephedra products from the shelf and destroy them or possibly face legal action. The FDA has not stated what their next course of action is going to be.
Most of these companies have complied with the FDA's wishes, others have not. There are companies still manufacturing diet pills that contain higher than 10 mgs of ephedra per dose but have not had any problems with the FDA at this point.
Ephedra diet pills had been removed from store shelves when a ban went into effect on April 2004. In April 2005 a Utah judge overturned the FDA's ban stating that the FDA needed to provide documentation that the herb was harmful if taken as directed. The FDA has not provided that documentation. No timeline has been established
In light of this ruling, ephedra diet products have made their way back on to the market.
Ephedra is a Chinese herb that has been used medicinally for 5000 years. With cigarettes, alcohol, and over the counter pain medicines killing tens of thousands every year, it seems that our tax dollars could be used for something better than trying to prevent overweight people from losing fat.
Most of the major suppliers of ephedra diet products have either filed bankruptcy or have discontinued making the ephedra diet pills. There are some newer companies out there that have recently launched products with the lower 10mg ephedra dosage.
Ephedra supplements were found online at a number of sport nutrition web sites. One site www.spectrum-nutrition.com http://www.spectrum-nutrition.com had over 8 different ephedra products available.
