Sterile No More: Blend Creations Warms Up Stainless Steel Jewelry

Husband and wife design team Vivian Cheng and Eric Jean-Louis take the streamlined utilitarian elegance of stainless steel and blend it with an array of textures and colors, to create stainless steel jewelry that is anything but sterile.

Frustrated by a jewelry industry of extremes—too ornate on one end, too austere on the other—husband and wife design team Vivian Cheng and Eric Jean-Louis created Blend Creations to spotlight their “just right” collaborations. Their stainless steel jewelry—available online at http://www.blendcreations.com and at select boutiques—features stainless steel pendants of varying sizes with bamboo, coral, bone tile, mother of pearl, ox bone, and Japanese paper inlays.

“In the past five years or so, stainless steel, titanium and other unlikely jewelry media, like concrete, have been surfacing more and more in jewelry design,” Cheng explains, with Jean-Louis adding, “No doubt in a backlash of sorts against the chaotic, cluttered jewelry that’s flooded the market for so long.”

“And while Eric and I were excited to see the emergence of this new artistic movement, we couldn’t help but feel that the designers were throwing away the baby with the bathwater, so to speak,” Cheng continues, explaining of the inception of Blend Creations, “We wanted to blend our talents, blend natural and man-made elements, and blend our Asian and Francophone heritage, using stainless steel as a canvas of sorts.”

In contrast to the sterility of much of the stainless steel jewelry whose appeal is primarily in the dichotomous nature of the materials used and the absence of color and organic elements, Cheng and Jean-Louis’ stainless steel necklaces are imbued with a sense of culture, style, and vibrancy. Whether through the natural spider vein patterns of the tiger coral they use, the gold ink accented floral rice paper, or hand etched oxbone tiles, their jewelry strives to marry the functional appeal of stainless steel with true artistic form and individual expression.

“Our jewelry, like our personal and professional collaboration, is all about bringing together things that are seemingly disparate but surprisingly complementary,” Jean-Louis says. One look at the old world Mah Jong tiles inlaid in the industrial world stainless steel pendant and you can’t help but understand what he means.

Blend Creations is the collaborative effort of husband and wife team Vivian Cheng and Eric Jean-Louis. These two blend their passions and proficiencies, their Francophone and Asian heritage and the organic and industrial to create their stainless steel jewelry. In addition to their line of necklaces, the duo also offers hand silk-screened paper goods at their online boutique.
