Traditional shopping indexes move aside; a new holiday fiscal forecast tool is the Poinsettia Meter from Initial Tropical Plants, http://www.initialplants.com, the single largest business purveyor of poinsettias and the largest provider of interior landscaping, design installation and maintenance services in North America.

Initial Tropical Plants’ Poinsettia Meter reveals that 170,525 poinsettias were purchased for client installations, to-date this season, compared to 155,025 last year at this time. To date, $1.1M in poinsettias have been purchased by Initial Tropical Plants surpassing $1M in poinsettia purchases in 2004 resulting in a 9.8% increase over the past year. Poinsettias are sold nationwide, but the Poinsettia Meter indicates that poinsettia power is merriest in Chicago ($188,388) followed by Houston ($124,355) Washington D.C. ($111,108) and New Jersey ($74,949). Poinsettias inspire the holiday spirit in offices, malls, hotels and window displays of all kinds from before Thanksgiving through New Year's Day. The holiday season extends from November to New Year’s Day and represents a sizeable chunk of annual revenues for the overall $900M interior plants sector.

“Strong poinsettia sales color the holiday season green and indicate that this is our most successful holiday season to-date,” said Jeff Mariola, president of Initial Tropical Plants. “With four more weeks until New Year’s Day, we anticipate even greater poinsettia sales.”

Poinsettias came to the United States from Mexico 175 years ago and are a shrub in the Euphorbia genus. Poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima) are native to southern Mexico and Central America and owe their common name to Joel R. Poinsett, a scientist and botanist, who introduced them to the United States when he was the first American Ambassador to Mexico over 180 years ago. Today over 65 million poinsettias are sold every year in the United States alone, making them the world's best-selling potted plants. “While traditional red poinsettias remain the most popular, they are available in an endless array of colors, from pink to burgundy, salmon, creamy white, yellow and bi-colored (mottled or marbled), with wavy or curved bracts and dark or medium green, variegated or oak-leaf foliage,” adds Mariola.
