“It’s a simple idea that is generating extraordinary results,” remarks Devin Mikles, M.D., Internist & Homeopathic Physician, as he gazes out his office window. “Few ideas are new, and FibroChoices certainly isn’t one of them. It’s just a different application of a few universal principles that work, and always work,” he continues.
That fibromyalgia sufferers would respond favorably, and at times, absolutely, to seemingly benign natural remedies and other complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM) modalities, cuts against the very cornerstone of Western medicine and its belief in the physician’s “absolute authority.” That’s one thing. But as Mikles puts it, “Simply prescribing these remedies isn’t enough. The fibromyalgia sufferer must participate in his or her treatment in a very significant and meaningful way,” he added.

Treatment Success is Directly Linked to Patient Participation
FibroChoices is the culmination of over ten years of Dr. Mikles’ research and practical experience in treating hundreds of fibromyalgia sufferers. Not a product per se, FibroChoices is a framework comprising a few dozen natural remedies and guided visualizations (audio CDs) clinically effective in improving fibromyalgia treatment and the treatment of its many companion maladies. Fibromyalgia sufferers then pick-and-choose from the prequalified framework, effectively building their own solution “bundle” to satisfy their particular symptoms.
“Something very remarkable happens when people are allowed to participate in their own well being. They respond with enthusiasm, and this very energy contributes tremendously to their treatment,” said Mikles.
Medical Arrogance Hinders Effective Treatment
Almost all of the products within Mikles’ FibroChoice framework are obscure, if not esoteric, to the average person. The result? People who need these remedies had no easy way to find them because the healthcare lexicon is foreign to just about anyone who does not work in the healthcare industry (and many who do). “So we did something about that. We decided it was time that we would step down and conform to a language people actually use. We developed an entire benefit/malady taxonomy so that people can simply describe what’s bothering them [to a search engine like Google], and we can respond,” said Mikles. “The other way just doesn’t work.”
Language is particularly confounding for maladies such as fibromyalgia where a significant percentage of physicians don’t even acknowledge the condition as valid or real. Consequently, many fibromyalgia sufferers are misdiagnosed or are not diagnosed at all. The way around this for Mikles was to simply account for these aberrations as part of the FibroChoice Framework itself. As such, the framework is broken into ten subcategories:
1. Fibromyalgia
2. Fibromyalgia + Depression
3. Fibromyalgia + Headache
4. Fibromyalgia + Heavy Metal Toxicity
5. Fibromyalgia + Sleep Disturbance
6. Fibromyalgia + Environmental Toxicity & Food Allergy
7. Fibromyalgia + Persistent Fatigue & Brain Fog
8. Fibromyalgia + Irritable Bowel Symptoms
9. Fibromyalgia + Muscle Pain & Stiffness
10. Fibromyalgia + Chronic Viral & Yeast Infection
“We use Fibromyalgia and Depression, for instance, but it’s just as much of an ‘or’ than an ‘and’ relationship. This is an important point because someone with IBS, for instance, who was diagnosed with IBS and not fibromyalgia, would never find these solutions otherwise. I know it sounds trivial, but it isn’t to the millions of people who are suffering from IBS, or depression, or persistent fatigue,” he added.
A Proven Effective Framework
When asked if he thought mass market retailers and etailers would begin to adopt his modality, Mikles acknowledged that the temptation would clearly be there, but also cautioned consumers to be skeptical of non-physician-based businesses that have a likeness to a doctor’s office or a licensed healthcare facility but are neither. “They do have pressures,” he admitted, “It’s just that they are more market driven than research driven.”
A Safe and Reliable Framework
As the public is quite aware, there is no direct FDA control on the quality of natural and herbal products sold over the counter to consumers in the United States, and many physicians have been alarmed by safety issues raised by this situation, and rightly so. In a study conducted by the Herb Research Foundation and the American Botanical Council in the late 1990's on products sold in the U.S. containing ginseng, many of the products studied contained no ginseng at all!
According to Mikles, “Choices requires that all manufacturers we do business with provide us with a copy of the detailed quality-manufacturing program used in production of all their products. Second, we require a qualified independent third party laboratory analysis on any lot of any product we purchase from any manufacturer ‘on demand.’ This third party analysis must provide conclusive scientific evidence that the product has in it the ingredients listed and at the quantity listed (to a reasonable degree), and that the product does not contain contaminants, including petrochemicals, pesticide or herbicide residues, heavy metals, pharmaceutical drugs, or microbiological organisms (bacteria, fungi or viruses).
This process allows us to obtain the highest quality products for our customers,” Mikles added.
