Ireland Calling U.S. Teens

Adventure Ireland, a cultural experience for U.S. teens in Ireland is now recruiting participants for 2006.

Donegal, Ireland (PRWEB) December 11, 2005 -- Adventure Ireland is a three-week cultural & activity programme for U.S. teens. Based in Co. Donegal, Ireland, the programme began in 1996, and hundreds of young American and Canadian teens have immersed themselves in all things Irish in the last ten years. The camp offers a ‘three strand’ experience: Mornings are spent in the classroom focussing on Irish history, Gaelic language, current affairs, Celtic myth and legend, music, dance and modern sociology. Afternoon pursuits include field trips to important historical and cultural sites, Gaelic sports, surfing, climbing and other modern outdoor activities. Evenings offer various modern and traditional entertainments, particularly music, theatre and fun activities for all to enjoy.

The programme is located at the Donegal Adventure Centre campus in the tiny surf town of Bundoran, Co. Donegal. An enrolment of 50 students from all over the US and Canada is expected. The age range is from 11yrs- 18yrs. There are no pre-requisites for the camp, other than an interest in the culture of Ireland, and a comprehensive list of parental references from previous alumni is available.

Programme director Niamh Hamill, who founded the programme in 1996 explains: ‘In my travels in the US, I met many people who participated in Irish organisations, pastimes, festivals and celebrations, but they had never travelled to Ireland to appreciate its beauty and heritage. I wanted to make a programme available that would introduce, consolidate and confirm all of the wonderful things that Ireland has to offer. I felt this programme should be directed at young people, so that they could use their experience to influence their journey through life. Irish culture has much to offer- the Celtic background is rich and inspirational, but there are also modern aspects that offer fantastic opportunity- the exceptional beauty and tranquillity of rural Ireland, the fantastic range of outdoor pursuits such as surfing and hiking and the friendly and welcoming atmosphere.’

The Irish Tourist Board and North-West Tourism support the Adventure Ireland programme. It is a unique product, offering an authentic experience of the modern and the traditional to the youth and student market in North America.
