Decades after beginning a career that would land him the title “father of modern networking,” Dr. Ivan Misner is still dispensing advice to his followers – a group that’s bigger than ever and growing faster by the day.

Misner, CEO of BNI (Business Network International), the world’s largest networking organization, started the company in 1984, and has since seen it grow to over 4,000 chapters worldwide. But never one to rest on his laurels, this networking pioneer is working harder than ever to spread the word about referral networking and its virtues.

“Without a doubt,” Misner says, “the tech-age has placed an even greater premium on one’s ability to form and utilize beneficial relationships. Where we meet with people, whether it be on the phone, in person, or over the internet, may have changed to some degree. How we should meet those people, however, has not. Knowing, strategically, how to handle your contacts to the greatest benefit is vital.”

Misner, and the company he founded, share a philosophy based on a proven notion that “givers gain.” Misner, also a professor at Cal Poly University in California, asked for an example of the type of information he’s still trying to spread, says that when it comes to networking advice, things have never changed.

“Listen and find out what's important to the people you meet, so you can pass along meaningful referrals,” Misner says. “You shouldn’t always be trying to sell something to someone. The best way to build relationships is to help someone whenever possible. And remember: givers gain. If I give you business you'll give me business and we'll both benefit as a result.”
