Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) December 22, 2005
Global television production company, TMC Entertainment, has established a new division, TMC Docs, which will produce primetime historical and contemporary documentaries for the worldwide market, it was announced today by CEO and Emmy Award-winning producer Drew Levin.
The new division will produce major event documentary series and specials for domestic and international audiences, launching with TMC’s “Walking the Bible” (http://www.walkingthebibletv.com) produced for PBS in collaboration with WGBH (Boston) and presenting station KQED (San Francisco).
The three-hour high-definition miniseries, which is scheduled for broadcast during primetime (8:00 p.m. locally) on January 4, 11 and 18 on the National Program Service of PBS, is based on the New York Times bestselling book of the same name by award-winning author, Bruce Feiler. It was executive produced and adapted for television by Levin, winner of an Emmy Award for his critically acclaimed PBS series, “Future Quest.”
“TMC Entertainment is proud to announce this new division, as well as its strategic alliances with such esteemed media partners as WGBH and Maya Vision International, and we are pleased to launch TMC Docs with the epic documentary, ‘Walking the Bible,’ which captures some of the most dramatic moments, breathtaking scenery and extraordinary footage ever filmed about the Bible,” said Levin.
“Filmed in five countries and four war zones, producing ‘Walking the Bible’ was no ‘walk in the park.’ Working with Maya Vision’s Rebecca Dobbs and her team, we were faced with both physical and political challenges during the filming of this epic journey for PBS, but, in the end, it was worth it,” Levin added.
“Walking the Bible” is one part adventure story, one part archeological detective work, one part spiritual exploration and is hosted by Feiler as he embarks on a 10,000-mile odyssey by foot, Jeep, rowboat and camel through the greatest stories ever told.
A continuation of Levin’s longstanding relationship with PBS dating back to the historical “Cosmos” series written by noted astronomer, Carl Sagan, the agreement between TMC and WGBH marks the beginning of an ongoing alliance for the two companies to collaborate on multiple platforms on TMC-produced projects. The agreement calls for WGBH to provide sales and marketing expertise in the international markets for “Walking the Bible,” as well as domestic retail home-video and DVD distribution for the project. WGBH will also work to secure domestic sponsorship and underwriting for key TMC programming, starting with “Walking the Bible.”
Additionally, TMC and WGBH are in discussions to create an agreement whereby WGBH would become a co-producer of select upcoming TMC epic documentaries.
“Walking the Bible” is an extraordinary series that we are very pleased to be representing. It fits in perfectly with WGBH’s catalog of the best programs produced for public television. We are very excited about upcoming sales to both international broadcasters and DVD outlets in North America,” said David Bernstein, Vice President and General Manager of WGBH Enterprises.
TMC Entertainment has also signed a production agreement with UK-based Maya Vision International, co-producer of the “Walking the Bible” series. The agreement calls for Maya Vision to serve as co-producer and handle the filming of TMC Docs’ ambitious slate. The next feature-length documentary series to be produced under the TMC Docs banner, in association with WGBH and Maya Vision International, is “The Route to Christianity,” a six-hour tour de force of the most fascinating sites of early Christianity. The company is also currently in discussions with author Bruce Feiler to produce a new miniseries based on his current bestseller, “Where God Was Born,” which will take viewers on a journey through the second half of the Old Testament (with the stories of King David, Queen Esther and the Prophets).
“Walking the Bible” was a challenging and fascinating project which took Maya Vision back to some of our favorite locations in Egypt, Jordan, Turkey and Israel,” said Rebecca Dobbs, Founder of Maya Vision International. “Working in HD, we were delighted with the luminous quality of the images, which bring alive the spectacular scenery of this fascinating part of the world.”
“Walking the Bible” is the most recent project in the long-term relationship between Levin and PBS. Levin’s extensive documentary and reality credits include renowned projects, such as “Future Quest” (PBS), “Cosmos: A Special Edition” (Chris Craft Station Group), “Stephen King’s World of Horror” (MTV) and “Hollywood Stuntmakers,” “FX Masters,” “Superstars of Action” and “World’s Most Mysterious Places” (all for the Discovery Networks).
Levin has assembled an impressive international production team, which includes Dobbs, who is well known for the BBC/PBS miniseries “Conquistadors” and “In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great,” and BAFTA Award-winning director David Wallace (“In Search of Shakespeare”).
Award-winning writer/producer Joan Meyerson (“Japan: Memoirs of a Secret Empire” and the Cine Golden Eagle Award-winning “The National Memorial Day Concert,” both for PBS) and Alex Gregory, a multiple Emmy Award winner (“The Living Eden” and “The Secret Life of 118 Green Street”), served as co-writers on the miniseries with Bruce Feiler.
Walking the Bible is the flagship project from TMC Docs, a division of TMC Entertainment. Founded in 2001 by Emmy Award- and Cable Ace-winning producer Drew Levin, TMC Entertainment has established itself as a leader in global television production and distribution. With a range of projects from documentary and reality-based series to creative children’s programming, TMC is recognized internationally for its quality productions.
