LI Woodworkers Club’s “100 Toy Gang” Donates Items to Children in Need

Winthrop University’s Children Cancer Center and Little Flower Children’s Home Receive Hand Made Toys.

Smithtown, NY (PRWEB) December 24, 2005 -- The members of the Long Island Woodworkers Club have shown their eagerness to use their talents for the good of the community by donating toys to children in need. The group’s toy-making division, the 100 Toy Gang, has been distributing hand carved toys to children’s organizations throughout Long Island for the past few years, most recently to the Winthrop University Hospital’s Cancer Center for Kids.

“We are glad to be able to bring a smile to the faces of these children,” says Steve Costello, head of the Toy Gang. “Our task is a labor of love. If they brighten up a child’s day, we’ll keep making those toys and delivering them where they’re needed.”

In addition to the aforementioned donations, the club has brought their diminutive works of art to the Morgan Center in Plainview, a non-profit organization that provides the opportunity for preschool age children with cancer to interact and socialize in a safe and stimulating environment, and to Mercy Hospital at Stony Brook University. They have also crafted six large radiator covers for the Prince of Peace grade school in Sayville, to prevent the young students from burning themselves on exposed radiators. Though the group primarily serves the Nassau Suffolk area, this year they have expanded their reach, inviting the US Marine Corps to pick up some of the toys they made for distribution overseas.

The 100 Toy Gang is but one of the divisions of the Long Island Woodworkers Club, which welcomes everyone with an interest in the craft of woodworking to attend their meetings. The schedule is listed on their website, www.liwoodworkers.org. Though they currently meet at the Brush Barn in Smithtown, they are hopeful that a larger, more permanent space can be found in Nassau or Suffolk, and ask that anyone willing to donate or lease such as space contact Mike Daum at 631.656.5423. Their main yearly event is the spectacular Woodworking Show and Exhibition held next year at the Hofstra University Sports Arena on April 1 and 2. All are invited to attend.
