Federal Student Loan System to Turn up with New Shape

The passage of ‘Deficit Reduction Act’ will restructure the entire student loan system. The bill is intended to improve the overall functioning of the system. It is expected that it will expand the accessibility of federal student loan and at the same time will enhance its efficiency.

(PRWEB) December 28, 2005 -- Federal student loan is a boon to students willing to continue with higher studies. Lots of options are generally offered to the borrowers to make the repayment process easy and simple. Standard repayment plan, Extended repayment plan, Graduated repayment plan and Income Contingent repayment plan – all these are designed for the sake of the borrowers. Besides, there are some strategies that help student loan borrowers to stay current on the loan accounts, thus protecting their credit from possible damages.

Now the idea is going to get a stronger base than ever before. The passage of ‘Deficit Reduction Act’ will restructure the entire system. The bill is intended to improve the overall functioning of the student loan system. It is expected that it will expand the accessibility of federal student loan and at the same time will enhance its efficiency.

The major step that has been taken in this bill is to make federal student loan more popular and acceptable among the people from middle and low income group. Loan fee is such a cost that keeps loans beyond the reach. So the Deficit Reduction Act is likely to cut the loan fee to a large extent. It will definitely make federal student loan more handy.

The other area of restructuring is the loan limit. Needless say limits always make a system closed. To keep pace with the tuition fee hikes, the loan limit had to be increased. So if DRA relaxes the loan limit that will be a practical decision on the part of Department of Higher Education and it will broaden the scope of higher studies as well. An increase in lender-paid fees is also expected within a short time.

The subsidies paid to the lenders have become prone to a possible reduction. The cost of insurance and that of collection will be reduced too. Insurance charge is demanded at the beginning of the loan term which makes it costly and the collection costs make the repayment tougher. Thus the reduction in these charges will affect the cost of federal student loan directly and will go in favor of the borrowers undoubtedly.

The most vital point related with loan is the rate of interest. Federal student loan had passed through different interest rates within a short time. So efforts have been taken to stabilize the system. Hope it will introduce a steady interest rate in future. Moreover the consolidation loan borrowers would be able to shift between fixed and floating rate of interest. However, a certain fee might be charged for switching.

The Department of Higher Education can introduce a process of reservation of fund for the people from low income group. It is a noble intention surely; however the act of reservation of funds had been the topic of debate for decades. Hope if reservation of federal fund is introduced, reasonable eligibility criteria will be designed too.

Apart from these, DRA also proposes similar funding structure for the student aid administration and other government accounts under U.S. Department of Education. Easy to forecast that it will help the student aid administration system to march forward with the same bits that the other departments do.

U.S. House Education & the Workforce Committee Chairman John Boehner is of the opinion that the Deficit Reduction Act will put a control over federal spending and can heal the leakage of federal funds. If all that have been anticipated go correctly, the federal student loan system is definitely going to be a godsend for the students. It will increase the number of college-goers and encourage graduates carry on with higher studies.
