The story, by AP writer Bruce Smith, appeared on the Associated Press' wire in mid-January and was carried in many papers and on the Internet across North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Since its founding in 1997, JK Harris has become a multi-dimensional financial services company with 470 offices in 45 states across the country and employs over 600 people. The tax resolution business accounts for a major portion of the nearly $100 million in annual revenues.

Smith reported that the company was started when Harris was approached by a local couple who discovered they owed $90,000 in back payroll taxes from a small business the wife had operated." At the time, Harris was a Certified Public Accountant, working in downtown Charleston.
A JK Harris customer profiled in the story was Sam Mathes of Camdenton, Mo., who once operated a $7 million trucking company with over 100 employees in Iowa. When a long-time customer broke a major contract, Mathes business failed and left him with more than $260,000 in payroll taxes.
By contracting with JK Harris, Mathes settled his debt with the IRS for $38,000. With a fresh start, Mathes started a new business last year.
