From Field Goals to Professional Goals, Former Football Star to Share Strategies for Getting Hired on at Cheyney University

The two-hour "Getting Hired 101" program, which will be held in Cheyney's Marian Anderson Auditorium, teaches students tips on what it takes to get hired in today's competitive workplace. Participants will learn everything from preparing résumés and proper dress for job interviews to analyzing and improving their verbal and physical communication skills.

Cheyney, PA (PRWEB) February 14, 2005 -- Four years ago, Harold Hill was like many hopeful college graduates. He was set to earn a bachelor's degree from the University of Richmond, but didn't know exactly what he wanted to do after graduation.

Hill, a star college football cornerback, decided upon graduation to become a business professional. Hill said he knew he wanted to work with people. However, he didn't know exactly how to best market his skills. He majored in speech communications, and minored in leadership, but he didn't have much experience working in the business world.

But since he graduated in December 2000, Hill's quick advancement in the business world has been an inspiration to college graduates who are struggling today to find their way in the world.

Hill, now a diversity recruiting manager for the Empyrean Management Group in Blue Bell, will be one of the featured presenters at a free "Getting Hired 101" seminar at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005. The program is sponsored by the university's Department of Athletics at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, located at 1837 University Circle, Cheyney.

The two-hour "Getting Hired 101" program, which will be held in Cheyney's Marian Anderson Auditorium, teaches students tips on what it takes to get hired in today's competitive workplace. Participants will learn everything from preparing résumés and proper dress for job interviews to analyzing and improving their verbal and physical communication skills, said Michael Kalinsky, president of the Empyrean Management Group. After each seminar, the Empyrean Management Group will offer free résumé counseling to interested students.

These seminars offer students the same chance at kick starting their career as Hill was given four years ago, Kalinsky said. At the Feb. 22 "Getting Hired 101" seminar, Kalinsky and his consultants will offer Cheyney students career-directing tips such as:

Decide where you want to live and work, based on your desires and the type of job market that exists in your chosen location. Explore job options on Web-based search engines like Google, Yahoo and Networking

Create a list of companies or industries where you want to work and research them. Attend college recruiting events and job fairs, and scan help wanted advertisements. Make sure spelling and grammar are correct in all correspondence, such as cover letters and résumés

Use an e-mail address that conveys a professional image to potential employers. Remove computer viruses before sending prospective employers any correspondence

Prepare in advance how you might respond to questions asked during a job interview. Be aware that your physical, oral and written communication skills will be assessed by prospective employers

Invest in a portfolio, at least one good pair of shoes and conservative attire to wear during a job interview

Since then, Hill has been promoted to a recruiting consulting position, travels on behalf of the company, and helps contact and screen potential job candidates. "A lot of employers won't take the time or take the chance on someone fresh out of school with little to no business world experience," Kalinsky said. "Now when we look back, it's hard to believe he is the same person."
