(PRWEB) February 16, 2005 -- Mountainside Treatment Center in Canaan Connecticut has established themselves as pioneers in their field of addiction treatment by incorporating a host of different treatment modalities into their program, one of which is addressing nicotine addiction (smoking). Since the programs inception Mountainside has taken the leadership role amongst treatment centers in improving success rates by the utilization of progressive methods such as encouraging residents to quit smoking.
Historically in the field of substance abuse treatment residents and patients of treatment centers were encouraged not to” quit smoking, or even attempt to, during their first year(s) of sobriety. During the late 1990s there were early attempts made by some treatment centers to incorporate smoking cessation into their programs. One popular approach was to completely prohibit smoking on their grounds. This method created an environment where cigarettes became contraband and counselors (many of themselves smokers) had to assume the role of policing and enforcing the effort. Administrators found themselves struggling with counselors to enforce the unpopular effort and with unreceptive residents who sensed the counselor's hesitation. This unpopular approach also affected the decision making processes of many potential admissions. Many prospective residents did not want to go to a center that forbade smoking. In a short time, after much frustration, the efforts to integrate a smoking cessation programs were stopped and treatment centers subsided to their older methodology.
In 1996 founders of Mountainside, all with strong backgrounds in the field of addiction, set off on a course to provide a treatment program that would improve the rates of recovery from the abysmal status quo of 10 to 15 percent to something more substantial. In order to achieve such a goal it was decided that there may have to be some radical changes made to the traditional treatment model(s). An extensive research project began that focused on the behaviors of addicts, historical treatment modalities, alternative modalities, and success rates. The founders then zigzagged across the country meeting with the heads of treatment centers to search out which treatment methods produced the best results and to learn any breakthroughs the treatment community had discovered. During this time a study was released that showed while 15 to 20 percent of the normal” population of this country smokes, 85 to 90 percent of drug addicts and alcoholics smoke.
Armed with a vast quantity of information Mountainside hired a consulting firm that specializes in nicotine addiction to help create cessation program that centered on compassion and motivational methods. Throughout the course of a few months a nicotine cessation program that complimented Mountainsides innovative treatment program was created and implemented and the stellar results speak for themselves.

We have taken this approach and expanded it. Now Mountainside has an Outreach Program that goes into various high schools each week with the goal of prevention.
