Bloggers Finally Get their own Banner Ad Sizes & Guidelines
Seven new standard banner ad units built specifically for blogs. The uniquely sized units will give bloggers and advertisers the opportunity to increase revenue by integrating the units into the majority of blog designs and layouts.
(PRWEB) February 1, 2005 -- Putting current industry standard banner ad units on a weblog is like trying to put square blocks into round holes, they just don't fit. The BlogKits BlogMatch Network, dedicated to matching marketers and bloggers, has released seven brand new ad banner units built specifically for blogs. Standard banner ad sizes don't cut it for bloggers who are serious about trying to generate revenue. They simply dont fit into the majority of blog layouts today, so they are not as effective as they could be," said Jim Kukral, Founder of the BlogKits BlogMatch Network.
According to Forrester Research, Blogging's share of Web traffic has grown from 2% in 2003, to 5% in 2004. Advertisers are beginning to see the power of blogs as a vehicle for delivering their message to small niche audiences.
But what advertisers have to realize is that placing an ad on a blog is different. With blogs, you can't just throw an ad up there; its got to fit just right in style and substance. These new ad units & guidelines will help advertisers deliver their messages into the majority of blog designs today."
On the flip side, bloggers will be able to integrate these units into their blogs without having to make their blog look like Times Square. Instead, these ad units will fit into the flow of their blogs, allowing for better click-through rates and a more positive ROI for advertisers."
The current new units are as follows. Text ads can also be used in the same dimensions.
Blog SideBar Units – Built to fit in blog sidebars.
150x50 IMU – (Blog Sidebar Mini)
150x100 IMU – (Blog Sidebar Full)
90x130 IMU – (Blog Sidebar Mini Tower)
Blog Entry Rectangles and Bars – Built to fit within blog entries.
335x 50 IMU – (Blog Entry Bar)
335x 25 IMU – (Blog Entry Slim Bar)
450x 50 IMU – (Blog Entry Rectangle)
450x 25 IMU – (Blog Entry Slim Rectangle)

Why Do Blogs Need their own Standard?
The majority of blogs are built with a common design and layout. Typically, a blog is broken down into 2 or 3 columns, sometimes more, with the largest main column acting as the blog entry space and the sidebar columns acting as space for links, contact information and banner ads.
All of the major blog hosting companies like Six Apart or Blogger.com provide a standard set of blog design templates with their software that meet a certain criteria of accepted blog design rules. Those design rules have been implemented across millions of blogs around the globe and have become quite standard. These new ad units are built to fit into those design rules, across the board," Mr. Kukral continued.
Take a look at some of the blogging giants like Steve Rubel's MicroPersuasion.com, or Nick Dentons Gawker.com. As powerful and highly visited as those blogs are, they still maintain the basic design rules that even less-visited bloggers adhere to. Theres no question in my mind that it was time for a new standard."
The Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB), keepers of the current set of voluntary interactive media guidelines and adhered to by the online advertising industry, has not yet proposed ad units built specifically for blogs.
The IAB is free to adopt these ad units into a new blog classification if they deem appropriate. I know they are supposed to meet on a bi-annual basis to review these types of things, so hopefully our contribution will help them on their way to recognizing blogs. This is just a start, it's time for the blogging community to come together and tell advertisers what works best for them."
