Does Homeschooling Work - Meet the 2005 Sonlight Scholarship Winners

Sonlight Curriculum, Ltd., a leading homeschool curriculum provider, has awarded eight scholarships to the winners of the Sonlight Curriculum College Scholarship Competition.

Littleton, CO (PRWEB) February 28, 2005 -- Sonlight Curriculum, Ltd., a leading homeschool curriculum provider, has just awarded eight students $60,000 in college scholarships. The winners will each receive a four-year college scholarship, ranging from $4,000 to $20,000 total, to fund their attendance at the colleges of their choice.

The scholarship winners' academic achievements include: an average SAT score of 1460; one perfect math score (800) and a near-perfect verbal score (790) on the SATs; a near-perfect ACT score of 35 (out of 36), with perfect scores in the Reading and Science Reasoning sections; and a perfect score of 5 on the Advanced Placement Physics exam.

Sarita Holzmann, President of Sonlight Curriculum, Ltd., said, "These young men and women are amazing. Not only do they excel academically, but they possess a spiritual maturity that is uncommon for young people their age."

Joshua Downer, the winner of the $20,000 top scholarship, and Anna Downer, winner of a $10,000 scholarship, were both part of the first homeschool team ever to win a National Mock Trial Championship in 2002. In 2003, they helped lead their team to a second consecutive 1st place win. To date, Joshua and Anna's team is the only team in the competition's 20-year history to win back-to-back championships.

Karith Magnuson, also a winner of a $10,000 scholarship, has lived much of her life in the Middle East. While in Cairo, Egypt, she cared for orphans in one of the poorest and dirtiest sections of the city.

The winners and their total scholarship awards are Joshua S. Downer, Signal Mountain, Tenn., $20,000; Karith A. Magnuson, Blaine, Minn., $10,000; Anna E. Downer, Signal Mountain, Tenn., $10,000; Mark J. Panaggio, Muskegon, Mich., $4,000; Alisa C. Engsberg, Mansfield Center, Conn., $4,000; John B. Coles, Potsdam, N.Y., $4,000; Jason K. A. Okerman, Kita-Ku, Kobe, Japan, $4,000; and Sally E. Forsythe, Homewood, Ill., $4,000.

These students plan to join previous winners at such prestigious institutions as Harvard University, Wheaton College, Bethel University, Bryan College, and Cedarville University.

Students are eligible for scholarship consideration if they have submitted a complete application by December 15 and used at least three Sonlight® Core homeschool programs. This year's winners have used an average of five Sonlight® Core programs.
