Oppidan Library forms joint venture to publish 50,000 titles of classical and out-of-print books.

50,000 classical, and out-of-print literary titles have been acquired by Oppidan Library. These works will be published through the following year as eBooks, PDF files, and print-on-demand editions.

Salt Lake City, UT - March 28, 2005 (Newswire.net via PRWeb)

Oppidan Library has formed a joint venture with an undisclosed private party, whereby Oppidan has acquired rights to re-publish some 50,000 classical and out-of-print book titles. These works have been accumulated over the past 100 years in a private collection. The terms of the joint venture call for Oppidan to digitize these works, and make them once again available to the public.

According to Doug Brown, manager of the Oppidan Library project, these works should prove of interest to educators and students of literature, as well as students of history.

The majority of these works were originally published before 1923, when the first copyright legislation was enacted in the United States. All of the works subject to the joint venture are free of copyright, and will be offered to the public with liberal terms of use licensing that will allow for the copying, or other reproduction of these works in any non-commercial use.

The first segment of the collection to be undertaken by Oppidan will be a group of 350 Elizabethan era works. This project will include Shakespeares First Folio" works, and many out of print works of Kyd, Jonson, Beaumont and Fletcher, Marlow, Middleton, and other of their contemporaries. This project will soon be offered on a CD, which will contain the books in different formats, which will allow users to print the books, edit (cut and paste) the text of the books, or display the books on a variety of PDA's and eBooks, as well as listen to the books on popular text readers.

Oppidan hopes to be able to offere these titles for pennys each, making this collection available to all those interested in this treasure chest of literature.
