Good Samaritan Hospital Cardiac Surgery Program Gets Final Approval
Accepting the endorsement of the New York State Hospital Review and Planning Council, New York State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Antonia C. Novello, M.D., M.P.H., Dr. P.H., has approved Good Samaritan Hospitals Certificate of Need (CON) application for a cardiac surgery program at the Rockland county hospital.
(PRWEB) April 2, 2005 -- Accepting the endorsement of the New York State Hospital Review and Planning Council, New York State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Antonia C. Novello, M.D., M.P.H., Dr. P.H., has approved Good Samaritan Hospitals Certificate of Need (CON) application for a cardiac surgery program at the Rockland county hospital. The final decision, which was expected, was delivered in a letter to the hospital and represents the final step that will allow Good Samaritan to institute a comprehensive adult cardiac surgery program.
Following the issuing of the letter from Commissioner Novello, the Board of Directors of the national Bon Secours Health System, headquartered in Marriottsville, Maryland, voted to release the $17 million promised to fund the cardiac center after state approval.
Construction is expected to begin on the new cardiac center within three months, with the actual surgical suite to open in approximately 18 months.
The new cardiac wing at Good Samaritan will be constructed on the second floor in an area previously occupied by the mother/baby unit, before it was moved to the new Union State Bank Birthing Center. The center will include a new state-of-the-art cardiothoracic surgical operating room, as well as recovery room. In addition a new cardiac catheterization lab, in addition to the lab that is presently operating on the first floor, will be constructed. The CON application gave approval for this second cardiac cath lab, which may open as volume increases.
Months of hard work on the part of literally thousands of people resulted in this decision that will lead to better cardiac care in the community. Community support for this application was both widespread and highly vocal. Support came from county, regional and community officials, business leaders, the labor unions, major health and civic organizations, and representatives of virtually every one of the communitys diverse religious communities weighed in with their support.

Once the new cardiac wing is operational, advanced procedures such as open heart surgery, cardiac bypass and aneurysm repair will be performed at Good Samaritan.
