Rescued exotic animals, enviromental heroes and a jungle princess will welcome thousands of visitors to the biggest Earth Day for kids in Southern California. In honor of the 35th anniversary of the internationally observed Earth Day, the Annual Childrens Earth Day is a unique, tropically themed outdoor extravaganza designed to inspire children to understand their role in protecting Planet Earth. The event will be held on April 24th, 10am–4pm, at the STAR ECO Station, located at 10101 West Jefferson Blvd. in Culver City.
DreamWorks Animation will be participating in the festival with free giveaways and prizes based on their new computer-animated comedy Madagascar. Tom Kenny (voice of SpongeBob SquarePants) will be autographing SpongeBob goodies! Special guests include Hart Bochner, (Anywhere But Here," Die Hard"), Kristin Herrera (Nickelodeon's "Zoey 101"), Devon Werkheiser (Nickelodeon's "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide"), Brenda Song (Disney's "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody"), and Amy Bruckner (Disney's "Phil of the Future" and the upcoming film "Rebound"). Dont miss Culver City Fire Chief Jeff Eastman, Recycle Rex and Miss Teen California Tourism! On the STAR Stage, spectacular live entertainment includes dance, music and theatrical performances by STAR Education students, as well as STARs Annual Innovation Awards Ceremony at 12 pm.
Sponsored by STAR ECO Station and STAR Education, Childrens Earth Day is a free festival featuring award-winning environmental education, games, crafts, activities, gourmet cuisine and live entertainment for the entire family. Santa Monica BayKeeper, Surfrider Foundation, Heal the Bay, NOAA and Tree People are just a few of the environmental partners who will offer booths and interactive environmental education activities to keep kids engaged all day long. Vendor booths offer unique eco-shopping opportunities for parents with an eye for worldly wares.
The event emphasizes the importance of environmental awareness in the childrens community and brings together various green organizations, museums, schools and individuals to show the kids of Los Angeles that they are a vital part of a larger, worldwide effort to protect the Earth. On April 22, 1970, the street, parks, and auditoriums of America were flooded with over 20 million people demonstrating for a healthy, sustainable environment. This was the first Earth Day, and the birth of the modern environmental movement. In 1990 Earth Day went global, and this year, on the 35th anniversary of Earth Day, millions of individuals around the world are celebrating their role in the international coalition to secure a future of a safe and healthy world.
STAR ECO Station works throughout the year to provide innovative environmental science education programs for children, parents, schools and community organizations, and to inspire a commitment to environmentalism in the childrens community. Through interactive tours of its 18,000 square foot environmental science museum and wildlife rescue center, and through educational outreach, assemblies, classroom instruction, fieldtrips, seasonal camps and community events, STAR ECO Station annually serves over 1 million learners of all ages.
Visitors to the internationally award-winning STAR ECO Station experience lessons of ecology and environmentalism on a breathtaking, interactive encounter with rescued tropical birds, exotic reptiles, wildcats and ocean life. Environmental partnerships enhance the station with 15 educational displays from such organizations as the World Wildlife Fund, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, NOAA and the Santa Monica BayKeepers storm drain display and walk-thru Kelp Forest. In August 2001, the stations founders won the prestigious Médaille dExcellence from Fête DExcellence, in collaboration with the United Nations, for their role in Youth Environmental Education in Geneva, Switzerland. STAR ECO Station has been voted Best Teaching Zoo/Animal Rescue" by LA Family Magazine, 2003, and Best Place to See Animals" LA Parent Magazine, 2002.
