Mark Cushway Wins Second Leg Of North Devon Open Surf Competition

In an epic final round Mark Cushway revealed his true metal to snatch a victory in the face of some extremely tough competition. With conditions steadily deteriorating Mark out rode and outmanoeuvred Australian wild boy Bruce Ramsey in the final few minutes to take his place on the winners podium.

(PRWEB) April 7, 2005 -- The afternoons action began with the competitors paddling out in a clean six foot swell to fight for their places in the quarter and semi finals. The howling offshore wind kept the waves standing although the choppy faces gave some problems in the earlier heats. Mark Cushway pulled off some fancy shredding against Californian hell man Kenny Roberts in the quarters and wiped the floor with the quiet Kiwi Russ Green in the semis to put himself within reach of overall victory.

Speaking from his hometown of Tiverton last night Mark Cushway said: I am stoked. It has been a long time coming but this win has really boosted my confidence. As the end of the final got nearer I knew I was behind on points and Bruce was pulling some awesome moves. The wind had dropped right off and the waves were starting to close out. I knew that I was going to need to pull something special out of the bag if I wanted to win and I guess I got lucky. I managed to catch two high scoring rides where I just concentrated on executing fast clean backhand manoeuvres and just at the end I pulled a fins-free vertical re-entry and that was that.

Next week we are travelling over to Durban to get some big wave practice and then on to Hawaii for the Tube Riders Open at the end of May. 2005 is definitely going to be my year and I cant wait to get in the water competitively again".

Runners up Bruce Ramsey and Russ Green joined Mark Cushway on the podium to claim their share of the prize money but it was Mark Cushways day and the general opinion seems to be that the circuit will be seeing a lot more of this youngster in the future.
