Pope related domain names: The new Internet gold rush?

With the recent election of Pope Benedict XVI, a global frenzy to register pope related domain names has been observed.

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) April 21, 2005 -- With the recent election of Pope Benedict XVI, a global frenzy to register pope related domain names has been observed.

"John Paul II's pontificate lasted 26 years. In that time the Internet has become hugely popular and I believe these recent events were a wake up call for domain name collectors everywhere," said William Starrett, founder of wideopenmedia.com an Internet marketing services firm that specializes in consumer focused Internet advertising, online business strategy, and usability issues.

"As a domain name collector myself, I was amazed to see how most of these domains were registered at the earliest on April, 1. Many of the domain names were registered as late as April 19. With regard to the recent craze for all names Pope, I have seen online auctions for everything from domains to hotmail email addresses," Starrett explains.

When asked about his plans for benedictxvii.com which he registered but only hours after Joseph Ratzinger chose his name Benedict XVI, Starrett returns, "It could be several hundred years if ever before there is a Benedict 17. There are so many people speculating this Pope to be the last or his papacy to be short. I personally hope the best for humanity but otherwise have no opinion on the matter. What I do know is benedictxvii.com is receiving a surprising amount of traffic because my best guess is that people are not too familiar with roman numerals. Is it for sale? Maybe but I enjoy domain names like many people enjoy coins or stamps. Obviously the subject matter would have to be appropriate."
