San Francisco Resident Sues The City Over Noise
The ear-splitting noise from the San Francisco Muni buses ruins the quality of life of area residents.
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) May 1, 2005 -- A resident of San Francisco, California is taking the The San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni) to court on chargers of creating a public nuisance. The case, filed in San Francisco Superior Court charges that, since the introduction of its new fleet of electric buses, Eduardo Bonsi's life has become a daily torment. "The Muni ruins our lives day and night with beeping noises, outdoor speakers, whistles and a noisy electric motor that just wails on," said Mr. Bonsi. "We cannot read a newspaper, watch television, sleep or work without being interrupted by the ear-splitting noises".
The unnecessary signals and mechanical noises affect the physical health and quality of life for San Franciscans. Muni transportation policies violate federal and state laws. "San Francisco is experiencing a noise epidemic and our government is adding to this chaos by making environmentally catastrophic decisions that harms the lives of its citizens," said Bonsi. "We repeatedly tried to contact Muni regarding the matter and received inadequate response".
A multimedia director by profession, Mr. Bonsi has been videotaping and collecting evidence and has testified before City Hall. In meetings, he spoke to Supervisor Jake McGoldrick, head of the MTA and District 3 Supervisor Aaron Peskin. "They seem to be aware of the problem but decided not to take any action," claimed Bonsi. "It was like talking to an empty room".
A website, Sound Pollution.org has been established for people suffering from noise in San Francisco. In addition to Muni buses, roaring motorcycles and screaming car alarms also create tremendous noise pollution. Bonsi also joined NoiseOFF, a national citizens' coalition working against noise pollution. Millions of people all over America are affected by noise pollution because of thoughtless individuals, businesses and even government agencies.
"We need to show the San Francisco Muni that citizens will not tolerate this kind of urban assault on our senses," said Bonsi. "San Francisco may be famous for its trolley cars, but it is becoming infamous for its Muni buses."
