New Arkansas Source Web Site Helps People Learn About Arkansas
Last week a new Web site, Arkansassource.com, was launched to help people learn more online about the state of Arkansas.

The Arkansas Source Web site includes sections on history, laws and government, geography, economy, demographics as well as important cities and towns. The informative Web site, launched last week, can educate anyone about the state of Arkansas. Arkansas may be best known for the beautiful Ozark Mountains and the plethora of exciting outdoor activities it offers. Among some of the interesting facts about Arkansas listed on the Web site include the information below:
- Originally Arkansas became the 25th state of the United States on June 15, 1836.Then, during the American Civil War, Arkansas seceded from the Union on May 6, 1861.
- The State flag, adopted in 1913, contains a diamond on a red field. It represents the only place in North America where diamonds have been discovered and mined. Arkansas is the only U.S. state where diamonds are found naturally. This is due in part to the many caves.
*There are also 25 white stars around the diamond which represent that Arkansas was the 25th state to join the Union.
- The state motto is: "Regnat populus" or "The people rule." The origin of the state's name is the French interpretation of a Sioux word "acansa," meaning "downstream place."
- The state is the only one with an official pronunciation. The traditional form, "arkan-SAW," was made official by the state legislature in 1881.
- The capital of Arkansas is Little Rock.
- Arkansas has a beautiful landscape of rolling mountains and valleys, thick forests and fertile plains. The Ozark and Ouachita mountain ranges in northern and western Arkansas are known as the Highlands; the southern and eastern parts of Arkansas are called the Lowlands.
- The state also contains six national park sites, two-and-a half million acres of national forests, seven national scenic byways, three state scenic byways and 50 state parks.
- The eastern border of the state is the Mississippi River. Arkansas shares its southern border with Louisiana, its northern border with Missouri, its eastern border with Tennessee and Mississippi, and its western border with Texas and Oklahoma.
