Diabetes is a disease in which the body dos not produce enough insulin or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that converts sugar, starches and food into energy for the body to use for every day life. An estimated 18.2 million people or 6.3 percent of the population have diabetes. However 5.6 million people are unaware that they even have the disease. A fasting test and an oral test can be used to determine if one has diabetes.
There are four major types of diabetes, type 1, type 2, Pre-Diabetes, gestational diabetes. 5 to 10 percent of people with diabetes have type one, most Americans have type two. About 4 percent have Gestational diabetes. Pre-Diabetes is a condition where the blood sugar levels are higher then normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as Type 2.
Some of the symptoms of diabetes are: frequent urination, excessive thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, increased fatigue, blurry vision, irritability. If a person has one or more of these symptoms they should be checked out by a doctor.
His story was featured on YAHOO News back in December and since then he has been determined to raise as much money as possible through the sale of his book Weapon X", which for Ruben represents a new beginning in his life.
