Multifunction and Photo Printing Are the Name of the Game in 2004 Ink Jet Market; Lyra report estimates worldwide ink jet MFP shipments increased more than 50% in 2004

The Hard Copy Observer Spotlight: 2004 Ink Jet Printer Market is the third of Lyra's three product-planning reports covering the printer market. The report provides strategic insight on and comprehensive coverage of the ink jet printer market, including how products and prices changed from January through December, current market trends, a review of the competitive landscape, and selected articles from The Hard Copy Observer.

Newtonville, MA (PRWEB) May 23, 2005 -- There was a marked shift away from single-function, general-purpose ink jet printers toward ink jet multifunction peripherals (MFPs) in 2004. A new report from Lyra Research, www.lyra.com, "The Hard Copy Observer Spotlight: 2004 Ink Jet Printer Market," estimates that worldwide shipments of ink jet MFPs grew approximately 52 percent in 2004, the highest annual growth rate in the consumer hard copy hardware segment. At the same time, at-home photo printing contributed to the growth of the ink jet market as consumers continued to adopt digital photography.

"Ink jet MFPs are popular with consumers because they provide additional functionality for a negligibly higher cost," says Ann Priede, managing editor of The Hard Copy Observer, a monthly newsletter published by Lyra Research. (For more information on the Observer, see www.lyra.com/lh3m.nsf/Newsletters/HCO.) "The growing number of consumers embracing digital photography has ink jet printer vendors rushing to add photo-printing features to both single- and multifunction ink jet products, as well as releasing a slew of ink jet printers designed specifically for printing photos in the home."

"The Hard Copy Observer Spotlight: 2004 Ink Jet Printer Market" is part of Lyra's "Hard Copy Observer Spotlight" report series. These product-planning reports combine all of the year's events in the desktop monochrome laser, color laser, and ink jet markets into three convenient, easy-to-use resources. Each report includes information on how products and prices changed from January through December, current market trends, a review of the competitive landscape, and selected articles from "The Hard Copy Observer." Written by the Observer's editors, these reports are designed to help product and marketing executives develop and hone plans for 2005 and beyond.
