Port Sailing School and Science Museum of Long Island Partner in Young Mariners Program

Port Sailing School announces an exclusive partnership with The Science Museum of Long Island (SMLI) to provide sailing instruction for the Science Museums Young Mariners summer program.

Port Washington, NY (PRWEB) May 31, 2005 -- Port Sailing School announces an exclusive partnership with The Science Museum of Long Island (SMLI) to provide sailing instruction for the Science Museums Young Mariners summer program.

The Young Mariners program created by Dr. John Loret, Executive Director of the museum, provides students between ages 11 to 17 the opportunity to explore the marine environment of Manhasset Bay and surrounding waters. During the two-week program students will spend half their day aboard the Port Sailing School launch with a Marine Science instructor learning skills used by commercial fisherman, including: setting an oyster dredge, pulling fish and lobster traps, collecting bottom sediments and plankton, and measuring the physical and chemical properties of sea water. The second half of their day will be spent sailing. The sailing program not only teaches students how to work together to sail 19- to 22-foot sailboats, but also completes the New York State Safe Boating Course, now required by law to operate any power boat for those between the ages of 11 to 18.

Port Sailing School is member of The American Sailing Association providing sailing instruction for both adults and children. Located at Brewer Capri Marina on Manhasset Bay, the school has a fleet of daysailers and cruising sailboats ranging from 19- to 30-foot. After completing the ASA Basic Keelboat course, new sailors can return to rent the boats they learned to sail on. Other courses include: Basic Cruising, Bareboat Chartering, Coastal Navigation, and the New York State Safe Boating course.

Interested parties can contact the Science Museum of Long Island at 516-627-9400 to register for the Young Mariners program. For the sailing school call 516-767-SAIL (7245) or visit www.portsailing.com.
