Minneapolis, MN / Stockholm, Sweden (PRWEB) May 31, 2005 -- US Internet Corp., an international Internet, hosting and application service provider, today announced a strategic alliance with Sweden-based Aptilo Networks to launch public wireless hot spots and management solutions nationwide with the city of Minneapolis metro area as the first target. The wireless solution would support both data and voice mobility.

As part of the strategic alliance, Aptilo Networks will supply the service management platform or the backend with US Internet offering public wireless Internet access or the front end. As the prime contractor on any public wireless LAN deployment relating to this initiative, US Internet is prepared to invest up to $20 million per market. In addition, US Internet is seeking other key partners to assist in major end-to-end deployments.

What US Internet and Aptilo Networks envision through their alliance is to offer digital cities" a secure mesh wireless canopy over an entire metro area so that emergency services personnel, such as police, fire and rescue, can have instant access to required data while maintaining the highest level of mobility. For businesses and residents, the wireless canopy would provide an opportunity to bridge the digital divide with a low cost Internet solution, instead of having dozens of hotspots that dont interconnect or are without a seamless handoff. With just one user name and password log-in, customers would be instantly connected to the Internet and experience true roaming anywhere inside an enabled wireless area the size of several square miles.

The backbone for this public wireless network is called mesh networking, a significant improvement for providing wireless coverage over first generation Wi-Fi, which was plagued with deployment problems and technology issues, resulting in low customer usage. With mesh radio technology, far lower total cost of ownership, better coverage and higher capacity is achieved.

In terms of customer service, US Internet will be able to perform remote network management support. From centralized help desk offices, tech support could diagnose problems in detail due to the wireless networks elaborate layer three architecture, which runs on Linux-based servers, thus allowing end-to-end visibility of the entire network.

The potential size of this market opportunity nationwide is very promising, considering we would be going after two major cities per state," said Kurt Lange, US Internet Vice President of Operations. This strategic partnership also marks the next stage in our companys evolution. For the past several years, weve been testing wireless applications for our business customers, waiting for the right opportunity to expand our footprint. The time is here. Aptilo has vast experience in implementing public wireless LANs to service providers around the globe. With their next generation wireless management solution, we will be able to upgrade our existing customer base to a better and more manageable platform as well as aggressively expand our ability to bring on new clients, both public and private customers, by offering a more flexible and scalable solution."

This alliance is of strategic importance to us, as it gives our company yet another strong customer and partner," said Torbjorn Ward, CEO of Aptilo Networks. The U.S. market is expanding to include large hot spots called hot zones, and with US Internet at our side, Aptilo is well positioned to grow its market share in management solutions in this growing field."

Through this initiative, we hope to help digital cities attract more business, improve public safety, bridge the digital divide, provide a great customer experience and improve quality of life for all users," said Eric Dentler, Aptilo Networks Vice President of U.S. Sales. To deliver this, you need to assemble the best-of-breed components in each area: best front end, best backend, best radio and best integrator. Well have all that, and thats how you minimize risk, address time to market issues and have a great business model and ultimately success."

Continued Dentler, Since this wireless deployment will support voice over IP with true mobility, imagine in the not too distant future cell phones with Wi-Fi modems in them, thus allowing free phones calls with no dead spots or drops."
