Miss Washtenaw County Katie Lorenz to Compete at the 2005 Miss Michigan Pageant
University of Michigan Senior Strives to Increase Volunteerism With Platform
Chelsea, MI (PRWEB) May 31, 2005 -- Heading off to Muskegon, Mich., to compete for the Miss Michigan 2005 crown is the current Miss Washtenaw County, Katie Lorenz. Appearing at the historical Frauenthal Center for the Performing Arts on June 12-18, 2005, the University of Michigan Senior will be one of 29 local titleholders vying to be the states delegate in the 2005 Miss America pageant.
With her platform, Volunteerism: Do What You Love," Lorenz hopes to take her success in increasing community service awareness and involvement statewide.
My platform asks the public to take what they already love to do and turn it into a service opportunity," said Katie Lorenz, Miss Washtenaw County 2004. Recently, I applied my love of dance to The University of Michigan Dance Marathon where I served as a dance captain in an event that rose over $250,000 for pediatric rehabilitation programs. As Miss Michigan, one of my goals would be to promote the legislation of grants for volunteer and community resource centers to aid in building awareness and involvement in such events."
Extensively trained in the dance arts, Lorenz will perform a ballet en pointe to Yannis Reflections of Passion" in the talent portion of the competition. Lorenz has performed at both Disneyland and Disneyworld and as a soloist for the Plymouth-Canton Ballet Company. She performed a lyrical dance to win the title of Miss Washtenaw County.
Lorenz is a senior at the University of Michigan, majoring in English, with a minor in Spanish. Her various academic accomplishments include being a national recipient of the Delta Gamma Philanthropic Scholarship, a member of the Order of Omega National Honor Society and a University of Michigan Writing Center peer tutor. She is the co-founder of Wolverine Kids Care, an interactive child abuse prevention program, and has held leadership roles in both Delta Gamma Sorority and the Order of Omega Honor Society. Lorenz has also worked as a campus marketing and promotional rep for Victorias Secrets PINK line, as well as for Plymouth-based Westwind Communications. Her future plans include obtaining a Master of Arts in communication and pursuing a career in public relations and marketing.
The Miss Washtenaw County Scholarship Program, a local division of the Miss America Organization, is a volunteer organization responsible for operating the annual Miss Washtenaw County Pageant. Since its inception in 1994, the Miss Washtenaw County Scholarship Program has awarded nearly $75,000 in scholarships to young women, giving them an opportunity to further their personal and professional goals. Involved in community service, fundraising, contestant recruitment and pageant development, the Miss Washtenaw County Scholarship Program is a preliminary to the annual Miss Michigan Pageant.
