Laguna Beach Mayor Announces Nationwide "Adopt a Landslide Family" Effort

They are teachers, senior citizens, and dual-working parents with most of their assets tied up in their homes. Now they have no homes and they must still pay rental and storage expenses, in addition to the mortgages on their former houses. Also, they will have to secure funds to build new structures. They need our help.

Laguna Beach, CA (PRWEB) June 14, 2005 -- Mayor Elizabeth Pearson-Schneider announces an effort to aid recent victims of Laguna Beach's landslides.

"It is the City's goal to repair the hillside, the infrastructure and the roads in the landslide area. In addition, we want to create a 'pad' for each homeowner to build a new home," said Mayor Pearson-Schneider.

The fundraising effort is called "Adopt a Landslide Family." Private donors, large companies, associations, unions and others are being asked to raise $150,000 for each of the 20 affected families through their employees, members and other avenues. Families are expected to be homeless for over two years. The funds will be used as follows: $3,000 per month per family for living expenses for 30 months – for a total of $90,000. An additional $60,000 of the funds would be used for geology surveys and initial architectural planning. "We will accept family contributions on a cumulative basis," added Pearson-Schneider.

The Mayor is partnering with the Laguna Beach Relief & Resource Center, a non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization. Contributions will be tax-deductible.

"Contrary to some reports, the families who lost their homes are not millionaires," said Ernest Stuart of the Relief and Resources Center. "They are teachers, senior citizens, and dual-working parents with most of their assets tied up in their homes. Now they have no homes and they must still pay rental and storage expenses, in addition to the mortgages on their former houses. Also, they will have to secure funds to build new structures. They need our help."

The Relief and Resource Center will be placing profiles of each of the families that lost their homes on the organizations website (www.lagunarelief.org). Those interested may select a specific family to support. The Relief and Resource Center will track funds received and distribute them to each family.

General donations are also encouraged. Checks may be sent to: Laguna Relief Fund – c/o South County Bank – 540 South Coast Highway – Laguna Beach, CA 92651. Contributions to the relief fund will not be used for operational purposes.

Those interested in the "Adopt a Landslide Family" program may contact Mayor Elizabeth Pearson-Schneider at 949-497-7128 or the Laguna Beach Relief and Resource Center at 949-497-7121.
