Award winning jazz trumpet player and rising star in the jazz world, Maurice Brown will be performing at The Jazz Bakery in Culver City, Calif., from June 21-26, 2005. The young trumpet player has played with many respected jazz veterans and urban contemporaries.

Culver City, CA (PRWEB) June 14, 2005 -- Award winning trumpet player and rising star in the jazz world, Maurice Brown will be performing with the Maurice Brown Quintet at The Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles (Culver City) from June 21-26, 2005. Playing trumpet and wah-wah pedal, Brown will be accompanied by Derek Douget on tenor sax, Ocie Davis on drums, Jonathan Baptiste on piano, and Jason Stewart on bass.

The Jazz Bakery is located at 3233 Helms Avenue, Los Angeles (Culver City), California. The performance is 8:00-9:30 p.m. Admission is $25. For further information about The Jazz Bakery or Maurice Brown’s performances, call (310) 271-9039 or visit The Jazz Bakery’s website at www.jazzbakery.org.

Heralded by Chicago Tribune critic Howard Reich, Maurice Brown was praised as “a virtuoso trumpeter, versatile composer and supremely confident bandleader.” Called a “trumpet wunderkind” by the Jazz Society of Oregon, Brown is receiving accolades from many quarters. Jason Koransky, Editor of DownBeat Magazine, said, “Brown is one of the most exciting young trumpeters in jazz--be it New Orleans or New York. His improvisations are fresh, his chops dynamic and he's writing what could very well become a new generation of hard-bop-meets-new-grooves standards." Speaking of Brown's first album, John Murph, of BETJazz.com said, "‘Hip to Bop’ sublimely integrates the intricate improvisational burn of bebop with the pulsating rhythms of hip hop and R&B."

Twenty-four-year-old Brown is active on the jazz circuit and music scenes around the country. His first album ‘Hip to Bop,’ released last summer, has been climbing the charts and is making its way onto top ten charts across the country. The young trumpet player has performed with many respected jazz veterans and urban contemporaries such as Ramsey Lewis, Clark Terry, Johnny Griffen, Lenny White, Curtis Fuller, Mulgrew Miller, Ellis Marsalis, Bilal, DJ Logic, John Legend, and Kanye West.

Winner of the 2005 Big Easy Awards for Contemporary Jazz and winner of the 2004/2005 ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer Awards for his composition, "Conceptions," Maurice Brown also won the 2001 National Miles Davis Trumpet Competition, held in St. Louis, Missouri. As a sideman, Maurice Brown has recorded with Curtis Fuller, Fred Anderson, Young Bleed, Roy Hargrove, Michelle Carr, George Freeman, and Ernest Dawkins’ New Horizons.

Maurice also leads a funk/hip-hop band called "Soul'd U Out." Says Abigail Ramos, Vice President of Brown Records, "Soul'd U Out is the ultimate collaboration between urban genres. They are taking hip hop, jazz, and R&B to the next level and raising the bar."

At such a fertile point in his early career, Maurice expresses a humble desire for musical progress, stating in his usual affable manner, "I just want to get better every day.” He adds, “My music pays homage to all the jazz greats. I blend elements of contemporary jazz, post modern bop and a dash of hip urban flavor to produce a very cool and sophisticated listen."

Born in 1981, in Harvey, Illinois, Maurice Brown realized in high school his natural affinity for the trumpet. While still in high school, Maurice performed with Ramsey Lewis at Symphony Center in Chicago. The Chicago Tribune gave him a rave review and he began to be recognized by jazz musicians and critics.

Currently residing in New Orleans, Maurice Brown leads the Maurice Brown Quintet, which appears weekly at Snug Harbor Bistro, New Orleans’ premier jazz club.
