Codex Alimentarius - Much Ado about Nothing? The Plot Thickens...

Enzymes, Inc. Reports On New Codex Alimentarius Devlepoments

(PRWEB) June 19, 2005 -- In response to recent US health supplement consumer concerns about Codex Alimentarius (Latin for Food Code) - a regulatory organization established in 1963 by the WHO (World Health Organization) and FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) to establish worldwide food standards and to ensure fair trade – Enzymes, Inc. is following the complex issues surrounding the multi-national organization and will continue to provide updates.

With the 28th session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission set to meet July 4th – 9th, the timeliness of this issue warrants revisiting, as there have been recent related developments.

H.J. Res. 27, proposing the withdrawal of the US from the WTO, was rejected by the US House of Representatives 86-338. Opponents of Codex supported this legislation. The yes" votes were fairly evenly divided between the two parties, and the total number of those in favor increased from the previous vote held in 2000 (Congress is required to vote every five years on whether the US should remain a member of the WTO ). The Senate will not be required to vote this year since the House rejected the proposal.

Codex adversaries opposed H.R. 3377 and S. 722 in the previous session (108th) of Congress, but they have not resurfaced in the 109th session. The fear is they may be hidden" by being attached to seemingly unrelated pieces of legislation. Two new House resolutions were introduced in May of 2005 (H.R. 2510 and H.R. 2485), pertaining to DSHEA enforcement, and may prove to be related. In addition, the ongoing CAFTA (Central American Free Trade Agreement) debate definitely has US Codex adoption implications.

In April 2005, the Advocate General of the EU Court of Justice found a related Food Supplement Directive invalid under EU law. This was seen as a victory over Codex regulation. However, many failed to realize this pronouncement was more of a judicial opinion than a ruling. On June 12, 2005 it was announced the final judgment, will be made by 13 European Court of Justice Judges on July 12, 2005 – three days after the 28th session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission has ended.

Edmond Burke said: "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing". Interested consumers should take it upon themselves to stay current with issues affecting them. Monitor new legislation through http://thomas.loc.gov/, view the Codex Alimentarius website frequently for current information, and contact your congressional representatives if appropriate.
