Gay Atlanta's Insider Travel Secrets Exposed

Atlanta finally gets its very own gay travel book.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) June 17, 2005 -- Although many gay travel guides exist, none are dedicated exclusively to Atlanta -- the South's largest gay capital. Finally, however, two friends who grew up in Atlanta together and who have lived in the city for over twenty years have written the city's very first gay travel book.

Jordan McAuley, the book's co-author (along with childhood friend Matt Burkhalter), says the two found new gay destinations to explore while writing "ATLANTAboy: An Insider's Guide to Gay Atlanta" (ISBN 0-9707095-6-0). "We decided to make them 'Insider Tips' in the book," he says. For example:

  • The AIDS Memorial Quilt -- the largest piece of community folk art in the world -- is housed and based in a warehouse near Midtown. Visitors can even call or stop by for a free tour

  • The cemetery where Margaret Mitchell (who wrote "Gone With the Wind") is buried

  • The location of "Driving Miss Daisy"'s home in Druid Hills

  • The two lead stars of "Queer As Folk" -- Gale Harold (Brian Kinney) and Randy Harrison (Justin Taylor) -- are both from Atlanta

  • Alan Ball, who wrote "American Beauty" and created HBOs "Six Feet Under," based both these hits on his experiences while growing up in Marietta (a suburb of Atlanta)

  • The restaurant (that used to be a house) where Margaret Mitchell really wrote "Gone With the Wind"

  • Fashion icon Kenneth Cole studied at Emory University

"ATLANTAboy" has also garnered the attention of local gay celebrities. Drag diva Charlie Brown, who headlines her own cabaret at Underground Atlanta, wrote the introduction. And Bubba D. Licious, named Out magazine's "Hottest Drag Queen," wrote the foreword. The book has attracted the attention of local businesses as well.

Philip Rafsoon, owner of Outwrite Bookstore and Coffeehouse, was so impressed with the book's "unique and useful information written by native Atlantans" that he's decided to hold a party celebrating its release at the store on June 21 at 8 p.m. -- the first day of summer and the week of Atlanta Gay Pride. Rafshoon calls it "a must-have for anyone visiting (or even living) in Atlanta." Gregory Pierce, the CFO and Vice-President of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, says, "Atlanta has needed a book like this for a long time." Finally, gay Atlanta doesn't have to wait any longer. "ATLANTAboy" will be available everywhere books are sold on June 21, 2005.

Jordan McAuley and Matt Burkhalter are both available to discuss more Insider Tips about gay Atlanta. Please call 404-354-4249 to inquire about their availability. Outwrite Bookstore is located at 991 Piedmont Avenue, Atlanta, GA 30309, 404-607-0082, OutwriteBooks.com. Also visit http://www.meganiche.com/atlantaboy for high-res photos and more.
