BRYN MAWR, PA (PRWEB) July 5, 2005 -- The American College, the nations leading financial services educator, announced today that an academic office on its in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania campus has been named in honor of Margaret I. Bradshaw, CLU, by the John Hancock Life Insurance Company. John Hancock is honoring Bradshaw for her pioneering role in insurance and her years of exemplary service to the company. The office dedication ceremony recently took place in MDRT Foundation Hall.

Bradshaw earned her Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU®) designation from The College in 1931. When I began in the insurance field, none of the general agents had CLUs and they didnt have an appreciation for the designation. Its different today,” said Bradshaw.

Bradshaw, who celebrated her 100th birthday this year, was one of the first women to ever earn the professional credential and the first woman in Rhode Island to earn a CLU. She was a well-respected insurance professional who taught the CLU curriculum at a time when nearly all the students were men.

Bradshaw developed a reputation as an effective salesperson, and was offered a position with John Hancock at a time when there were very few women in the field. Throughout her professional career she excelled in areas where many of her male counterparts did not.

We thank John Hancock for its support of the American College and join them in honoring Margaret. Her trailblazing spirit advanced the presence and acceptance of women in the financial services industry and elevated recognition of the significant business contributions women make to the productivity and profitability of companies,” said Dr. Larry Barton, President and Chief Executive Officer for The American College.

James M. Benson, CLU, President and Chief Executive Officer of John Hancock Life Insurance Company participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony honoring Bradshaw.

At John Hancock, we have had the honor of Margarets leadership and presence for many years,” said Benson. It is only fitting that we reflect some of that honor back to her, while we support The American College which has so enriched our industry.”

A sundial garden on the campus also was dedicated to Bradshaw in September of 2004. It serves as a symbol of her love for The American College. The American College has been instrumental in making insurance a profession,” said Bradshaw.
