New York Times and Charleston Mercury Try to Turn "Times of the Civil War" into Amazon Best Seller

It happened as the nation approached the Fourth of July weekend. The New York Times and the Charleston Mercury, arch opposites in the book, "Times of the Civil War" (ISBN 1-4208-0694-7), seemed to join forces to try to take the book to Amazons Best Seller List.

(PRWEB) July 4, 2005 -- It happened on several occasions approaching the Fourth of July weekend. The New York Times and the Charleston Mercury, arch opposites in the book, "Times of the Civil War" (ISBN 1-4208-0694-7), seemed to join forces to take the book to Amazons Best Seller List. Undaunted, the book about the Civil War coverage by two of American journalism's earliest giants, gamely rose to a hairbreadth of its place in the sun, time and time again, only to be brushed back by unseen forces.

It was a total surprise that the book, a Civil War book at that, rose the way it did," said author Don Bracken. "Usually, a book with a PR machine and a huge sales force does things like that. 'Times of the Civil War' apparently did it on word of mouth."

"Times of the Civil War" is a book that looks at the Civil War with a threefold perspective, that of the special correspondents of the New York Times, the correspondents and writers of the Charleston Mercury and the modern day historian. "It gives the reader an understanding of what the citizens on both sides of the War were thinking, or at least were being told, and what the reality was as seen by the modern day historian," said Bracken. It's a prism for wartime reality."

Bracken, senior editor of History Publishing Company, uses modern day techniques to examine history. Focusing on American History, particularly the American Civil War, he has recently co-edited and published the acclaimed "Civil War Historyscope Series," a computerized visual graphic for the classroom, illustrating the scope and intensity of the War.

He also plans an early release of a free recording to educational groups, of a digital audio production of a Confederate body of troops emitting the famous rebel yell based on a recording of an actual Confederate veteran taken in 1935.

"Times of the Civil War" (ISBN 1-4208-0694-7) is available at all major Internet book outlets.
