ITtoolbox Spyware Survey Results Indicate an Increase in Enterprise Level Spyware Infections

In this comprehensive survey on managing spyware threats in the enterprise environment, IT and business professionals worldwide provided insight on the occurrence of spyware and the methods they use to detect and remove it from their networks. The survey results indicate that despite the frequency of spyware infections, corporations are still underutilizing available solutions to ensure their security.

Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) July 13, 2005 -- ITtoolbox, the leading collaborative network for the IT market, has released the results of the 2005 ITtoolbox Spyware Survey. This survey measured the prevalence of and risks associated with spyware in the enterprise environment, as well as the methods used to detect and remove spyware on a corporate network.

Participants for this online survey were recruited directly from the global ITtoolbox network. Each participant responded to questions regarding the presence of spyware on the corporate network, the resultant degradation of network resources and system performance, and the success rates of spyware detection and removal software.

The survey results indicate that despite the fact that spyware infections occur frequently in the enterprise environment, corporations are still underutilizing available solutions for its detection and removal. Of the IT and business professionals surveyed, 88% had detected spyware on their corporate network but only 52% had purchased and were using an anti-spyware software solution. Other key findings include:

  • Increased spam, network congestion, and network crashes were the top three security issues that corporations face as a result of spyware.
  • 63% of respondents stated that their organization had spyware adequately controlled, but would benefit from improvements in spyware detection and removal.
  • Pop-up ads, other Web sites, and drive-by downloads were the top three ways spyware gained access to corporate networks.

"With the dramatic increase of incidents that contribute to spam and network congestion, spyware has moved from being an irritant to a costly security issue," remarked George Krautzel, ITtoolbox co-founder and president. What is surprising is that even with the increased understanding of the cost of spyware to an enterprise, companies continue to move forward without adequate anti-spyware software. A majority of the survey participants who indicated that their company did not have anti-spyware software stated that there were no future plans to purchase a solution."
