Digital Camera Costs Under Fire

Tougher competition brings prices down - consumers benefit.

(PRWEB) July 13, 2005 -- Demand for digital cameras is still on the rise and though considered high-tech only a year or two ago, theyre fast becoming an ordinary consumer item. By January 2006 more than half of all American households will own at least one digital camera, predicts the Photo Marketing Association (PMA.) As competition stiffens in this market, sliding prices are benefiting the consumer. Right now Samys Camera is offering a special on the Olympus Camedia D-535 Zoom, 3.2 Megapixel.

The ergonomic Olympus D-535 has an easy-to-use one-button, one-function operation. It features a 3.2-megapixel resolution, 3x optical zoom, built-in pop-up flash, 12 MB internal memory and XD Picture Card compatibility, and a movie mode with sound that can capture as much video as your memory card can handle.

If you are one of the thousands of consumers buying a digital camera for the first time, the wide variety of manufacturers and model can be quite confusing. The camera you choose depends on the type of photographs you plan to take.

Its not so much about megapixels anymore – its about the quality of the picture you get. A megapixel contains roughly 1 million pixels, or picture elements, tiny squares of light that make up the digital image. This digital camera shoot out can give you an idea of how different cameras with the same megapixels perform.

Online reviews for the Olympus D-535 average four stars and include comments like, The camera takes very good photos and the quality of LCD is excellent” and This is my first camera and I got it because the reviews were favorable especially for the picture quality.”

Industry insiders and analysts say consumers today are looking for the best quality picture at the best price. They see average selling prices falling from the 2004 level of $340 to $295 by the end of 2005 and to $200 by 2009, predicts IDC, a market research firm in Framingham, Mass. These predictions make the current offer on this Olympus D535 digital camera even more attractive at $129.
