New York Times Embarrassed; Charleston Mercury Lauds Victory

The ugly dispute that is called by some a Civil War, was turned into a national humiliation for both the Federal Government and the New York Times at a place called Manassas on July 21. The year was 1861.

(PRWEB) July 22, 2005 -- The ugly dispute that is called by some a Civil War, was turned into a national humiliation for both the Federal Government and the New York Times at a place called Manassas on July 21.The year was 1861. After announcing a major victory by Federal forces at that place adjacent to Bull Run Creek on July 22, the New York Times had to reverse its position the following day, July 23, and announce the national disaster. Further south, the Charleston Mercury, never doubting victory, delighted in announcing the rout of the invaders. It is this coverage of the Civil War that Don Bracken captures in his book "Times of the Civil War."

" 'Times of the Civil War' is a book that looks at the Civil War with a threefold perspective, that of the special correspondents of the New York Times, the special correspondents and writers of the Charleston Mercury and the modern day historian," says author Don Bracken. "It gives the reader an understanding of what the citizens on both sides of the War were thinking, or at least were being told, and what the reality was as seen by the modern day historian," added Bracken. "Its a prism for wartime reality."

Bracken, Senior Editor of History Publishing Company, uses modern day techniques to examine history. Focusing on American history, most recently the American Civil War, he has co-edited and published the acclaimed Civil War Historyscope Series, a computerized visual graphic illustration of the 384 major battles of the Civil War for the classroom. He has also developed, through the use of sound technology, the simulated sound of a company of Confederate troops emitting the famous rebel yell which will be available, upon request, to school and educational groups.

Times of the Civil War (ISBN 1-4208-0694-7) is available in selected bookstores and at all major internet book outlets.
