Ft. Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) July 27, 2005 -- Metrolink, the commuter rail system for Los Angeles and Southern California, announced that following a national competition, it has selected RailSecure LLC, to provide security and counterterrorism risk mitigation assistance, including: vulnerability & risk assessments of selected facilities; managing a multi-agency security exercise; and, conducting training to senior executives, security staff, and over 700 employees. The contract was awarded and work began on June 1, 2005. Metrolink is also known as the Southern California Regional Rail Authority (SCRRA). RailSecure is a global leader in passenger and freight railroad security and counter-terrorism consulting,

"Metrolink has always viewed security in a proactive light, and this important partnership with RailSecure is just part of our system-wide commitment," said Ed Pederson, the Manager, Safety & Security of SCRRA. "Immediately after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks, the SCRRA initiated a threat assessment of all of our major facilities, including Los Angeles Union Station and other maintenance and operation locations. Since that time Metrolink has undertaken a number of additional steps to increase our security efforts, including coordinating efforts with local police, the FBI, and the Department of Homeland Security to recognize threats against our service before they happen; working with local police agencies, the freight railroads, and the federal and state regulatory agencies on railroad security measures; working with local police and fire departments on responding to any type of rail emergency; and, providing threat awareness training for staff members, conductors, engineers, and other contractor employees. In addition, Metrolink has implemented additional measures since the attacks on trains in Spain on March 11, 2004. The alliance of Metrolink and RailSecure will help to protect our passengers, employees, trains, and system from terrorism and crime."

In a press conference, John Hart, RailSecure's CEO said, "It is now abundantly apparent that forces of terror, including al Qa'ida, are targeting passenger rail services around the globe, as we have seen most recently in the London and Madrid rail bombings. All of us at RailSecure take pride in having been selected by Metrolink as their partner in rail security. We recognize the importance of this task and will work closely with the Southern California Regional Rail Authority and all appropriate stakeholders in the performance of this program's security assessments, counterterrorism training, and other rail security activities on behalf of Metrolink."
