Homeschool Prepares Female Cadet for Air Force Academy, Number of Students with Non-traditional Schooling Growing in Military Service Academies

Some may think that homeschoolers have a lesser chance of gaining acceptance into high achievement military academies, but the number is on the rise.

Colorado Springs, Colo. (PRWEB) August 17, 2005 -- As a homeschool student, one might think that Sarah Alford of Aurora, Colo., had a lesser chance of being accepted to the United States Air Force Academy than students with traditional schooling. But she maintains that homeschooling couldnt have been a better choice.

Throughout her tailored education, Alford focused on several areas needed to develop her character which enabled her to meet her dream of being accepted to the Academy. In addition, she enrolled in college-level calculus, physics and computer science courses at her local community college to fulfill the class requirement for admissions.

According to Alford, the literature-based studies offered by Sonlight Curriculum, Ltd. made learning easier and more flexible, which allowed Alford to seek outside activities, like fencing, and to later join the Air Force Jr. ROTC to expand her leadership and communication abilities.

She says the skills she gained from speech and debate training with other homeschoolers gave her an advantage for her crucial interview with senators and congressmen, just one part of the demanding admissions process.

The Home School Legal Defense Association notes that the number of homeschoolers enrolling in military service academies and other military schools is growing. Many homeschool students score above traditional high school graduates on placement exams for high achievement military schools, such as the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO.

Sonlight Curriculum Ltd. is located in Littleton, Colorado, and provides literature-rich education and curriculum for homeschoolers in all 50 states and over 150 countries worldwide.
